Скрытые сокровища in short

Lewis argues that success is earned. He sets out dozens of rises from poverty, from Drew and Vanderbilt to Field, Howe and Garfield. Each life is a short case, and each case supports a rule.

What Скрытые сокровища is about

A twelve-year-old boy stands at a ferry landing with a string of horses and no money for the fare. His father forgot to give him the cash. Cornelius Vanderbilt walks up to a stranger, the hotel owner, and offers to leave one horse as security. The owner is struck by the boy's nerve and advances the money. The horse is reclaimed within forty-eight hours.

Hidden Treasures is a collection of life stories written in the late 1800s for young men by Harry A. Lewis. He starts from a plain fact: seven tenths of the most successful men of the country began life poor. He follows financiers, editors, inventors and statesmen from childhood to the peak of their careers. Then he turns their habits into working rules for money, work, time and character.

Для кого. You will enjoy this book if you like biography in short portraits, old-fashioned self-help, and stories of people who built careers from nothing. It offers practical rules about money, work, time and character.

The 7 key ideas

Success comes from character, not luck

The book starts from a plain claim. Some people succeed and others fail, and Lewis notes that seven tenths of the most successful men began life poor. A careful look at their lives, he argues, shows habits at work, not good fortune. Luck is the word people use to excuse themselves.

Alexander T. Stewart is his test case. He arrives from Belfast at sixteen, friendless and almost penniless. He later owns a marble store that twenty-five thousand people enter each day. A small inheritance helps him. Lewis insists that he was ready to use it wisely because he had already worked and saved.

John W. MacKay gets the same treatment. The silver he finds on the Comstock Lode looks like a fortune dropped from the sky. Lewis points instead to years of failed hopes and a search through twelve hundred feet of ground at a cost of half a million dollars. Endurance keeps MacKay in the hunt.

Lewis says that will shapes circumstances instead of being ruled by them. A pound of courage, he writes, is worth a ton of luck. Life is not a lottery.

When someone succeeds, ask what that person did in the years before the break came.

Start at the bottom and master every detail

Again and again Lewis praises men who began on the lowest step and never hired help to do what they could do themselves.

What is Hidden Treasures by Harry A. Lewis about?

It is a collection of short biographies of financiers, editors, statesmen, generals, inventors and preachers. Lewis uses them to show why some people succeed while others fail, and he adds chapters of advice on thrift, focus, self-reliance and spare time.

Is Hidden Treasures a true story?

Yes, in the sense that it is nonfiction. It retells the real lives of people such as Vanderbilt, Stewart, Cyrus Field, Garfield and Edison, drawing on newspapers and earlier biographers. It was written in the late 1800s for young readers.
