Herland in short
Herland follows three men who find a country of women who have lived alone for two thousand years. They meet people who are strong, calm and well organized, and who see motherhood as the nation's chief work. Step by step the men learn how this society grew from a disaster, how it grows its food, raises its children and keeps its faith.

Three American friends hear the same strange tale from guides along a jungle river. Far up in the mountains, they say, lies a country where only women and girls live. Would you laugh at that story, or go and look? Terry, Jeff and Van do both, and what they find overturns every idea they brought.
Herland was written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and first appeared in 1915 as a magazine serial. Gilman wrote about work, marriage and the raising of children, and here she tells it as an adventure with humor. You meet a hidden country of three million women and see how it runs its farms, schools, faith and courtship.

Three friends chase a legend upriver
Van, Terry and Jeff are old classmates who share a love of science. Terry is rich and loves to explore, Jeff is a doctor who dreams of poetry and plants, and Van is a sociologist. They join an expedition up a great river.
Among the native guides, Van keeps hearing one story. Far up in the heights lies a Woman Land, where no men live. Those who went to see it never came back. The three laugh at the savage dream.
Then Jeff finds a strip of bright scarlet cloth below a waterfall, well woven and patterned. No tribe nearby makes such fabric, so somebody above spins, weaves and dyes. Terry plans a private expedition with a yacht, a motorboat and a biplane. On the voyage Terry expects a pleasure resort, Jeff imagines roses and babies, and each argues from his own assumptions.
The three explorers set out to find women and bring only their own assumptions.

Main characters
- Vandyck Jennings Van is the sociologist who tells the story, a thoughtful man who wants to understand Herland and slowly learns to love Ellador on her own terms.
- Terry Nicholson Terry is the rich, confident explorer who leads the trip and believes he can win any woman by mastery.
- Jeff Margrave Jeff is the gentle doctor and dreamer who worships women and wants to serve and protect them.
- Ellador Ellador is a forester with a clear mind, who becomes Van's close friend and wife and wants to learn about his world.
- Celis Celis is a fleet-footed young woman with blue eyes who loves Jeff and does not understand why a woman should not carry things.

How it ends (spoiler)
Terry's attack on Alima leads to a trial, and the women sentence him to go home. Terry and Van prepare to leave with the flyer, and Ellador chooses to accompany Van. Jeff stays behind with Celis, who is expecting a child. The council asks the visitors to keep the location secret until Ellador returns with her report. Terry is made to promise, and the three leave Herland together.
