Тяжёлые времена in short

This novel follows what grows from a bad seed. Gradgrind plants facts and nothing else in his children, and the harvest comes in its seasons. Louisa marries a man she does not love, to please her father and help her brother.

What Тяжёлые времена is about

What happens to a child who is taught never to wonder? Dickens asks that question in his novel of 1854, and he answers it through a family, a school and a smoky northern town where everything is weighed, counted and sold.

The story opens in a bare schoolroom. Thomas Gradgrind, a rich retired merchant, tells the teacher to plant nothing but facts in his pupils. Soon a girl raised among circus horses cannot define a horse, and a pale boy trained in facts can. Knowing about a thing and knowing the thing are not the same. You meet Gradgrind, his children Louisa and Tom, the circus girl Sissy Jupe, the boasting banker Bounderby and the weaver Stephen Blackpool.

Для кого. Readers who love comic villains, vivid towns and satire mixed with moving friendship will enjoy this novel. It also suits anyone who has felt reduced to a number at school or work.

A schoolroom where only facts are planted

The novel opens with a speech. Thomas Gradgrind, a square-faced man with a forehead like a wall, tells the teacher to teach children nothing but facts. He says the same method raises his own children.

The schoolroom is whitewashed and bare, and the pupils sit in rows like jugs waiting to be filled. The teacher, Mr M'Choakumchild, has been turned out by a training factory like piano legs. He knows a vast amount about rivers, mountains and trades. Dickens wonders aloud whether he will kill the child's imagination or only wound it.

Earlier comes the first test. Gradgrind points at girl number twenty and learns her name is Sissy Jupe. He tells her to say Cecilia instead, and she is told never to mention the circus ring at school. Then he demands a definition of a horse. Sissy, who has lived among horses all her life, freezes.

A pale boy named Bitzer rattles off the answer, with forty teeth and hooves that need shoes. Gradgrind declares that now she knows what a horse is. When Sissy says she would carpet a room with flowers, she is told that she must never imagine. Bitzer has the words and no feeling for the animal. Sissy has the knowledge and no words that count.

A school can teach everything and still starve a child.

Вопросы о книге Тяжёлые времена

What is Hard Times about?

It follows the Gradgrind family in the mill town of Coketown. Thomas Gradgrind raises his children on facts alone, and the story shows what that does to them, to a circus girl in their care, and to the workers around them.

Why is the town called Coketown?

Coke is a fuel made from coal and burned in factories. Dickens names the town for the smoke and soot that cover its brick streets, which makes it the symbol of a place ruled by machines and profit.

Who is Sissy Jupe?

Sissy is the daughter of a circus performer who is taken into Gradgrind's home and school. She is poor at figures but warm and loyal, and she stands for the feeling and imagination that the town's system ignores.

When was Hard Times written and is it based on real events?

Dickens published it in 1854, first in weekly parts. The characters are invented, but the setting reflects real factory towns, strikes and school debates of his time, and he visited a northern mill town while preparing it.

Is Hard Times easy to read?

It is one of Dickens's shortest novels, with brisk chapters, memorable characters and plenty of comedy. The plot moves along clearly, and the narrator's lively voice makes it a pleasure to hear aloud.
