Сказки Ганса Христиана Андерсена. Второй сборник in short

This collection is a gallery of small worlds. A flax plant, a daisy, a stork family, a lamp and a pair of porcelain lovers each face change, danger or scorn, and each answers in its own way. The longest tales, The Wild Swans and The Little Mermaid, carry the deepest feeling, while the shortest make their point in a breath.

What Сказки Ганса Христиана Андерсена. Второй сборник is about

What does a flax plant feel when it is pulled up by the roots, steeped in water, roasted near a fire and combed? In these tales by Hans Andersen, it feels hope, and that hope carries it from a blue flower to white linen to paper covered in poems. A mermaid gives up her voice for a pair of legs. A poor boy rides a brass pig through moonlit Florence. An emperor walks in a procession wearing nothing at all.

H. C. Andersen, the Danish storyteller, wrote these tales for children and for the grown people listening over their shoulders. He gave ordinary objects a voice and a heart, and each one shows a small truth about pride, hope, kindness or vanity. You get the whole collection, tale by tale, with gentle humor, sharp teasing of the self-important, and now and then a sorrow that stays with you.

Для кого. This is for readers who love fairy tales with a wise, teasing voice, for parents looking for stories to share aloud, and for anyone who likes talking flowers, brave mermaids and objects with feelings.

The story in 10 parts

Hope carries the flax through every hardship

The first tale, The Flax, shows a plant that meets every change with cheer. It stands in bloom with pretty blue flowers, and the fern sings a mournful little song about an ending. The flax answers that tomorrow the sun will shine or the rain will fall, and that it can feel itself still growing.

Then people pull it up by the roots, lay it in water and set it near a fire. It is steeped, roasted, broken and combed, then spun so quickly that it can scarcely collect its thoughts. Each time, the flax decides it has been lucky. It becomes fine white linen, then twelve garments, then rags, then white paper, and on that paper are written beautiful stories and poems that make people wiser and better.

The old oak in The Last Dream of the Old Oak shares this calm spirit. It pities the flies that live a single day, and near Christmas it dreams of its whole life. Meet each change with hope, because the song is rarely finished.

Characters, plot and themes

Main characters

  • Eliza A king's daughter who searches the world for her eleven brothers, who have been turned into swans, and will endure pain and silence to free them.
  • The Little Mermaid The youngest sea princess, quiet and thoughtful, who longs for the human world and for an immortal soul, and pays a heavy price to win both.
  • Karen A poor girl who loves a pair of red shoes so much that she cannot pray, listen or think of anything else in church.
  • Little Claus A poor villager with one horse who uses quick wits and tall tales to outsmart his richer, harsher neighbor.
  • Great Claus A village man with four horses who bullies his neighbor and copies every scheme, hoping for the same riches without the cleverness.
  • The Emperor A ruler who loves clothes more than his army and fears being thought unfit, which makes him easy prey for two swindlers.
  • The Flax A cheerful blue-flowered plant that treats every hardship as a step toward something better and keeps believing the song is not over.
  • The Portuguese Duck A farmyard duck who boasts of her foreign birth and good heart, and sets out to look after a little singing bird.

How it ends (spoiler)

In many of the tales, justice arrives in a quiet way. The flax burns and rises as sparks, and the little mermaid, dissolved into foam, becomes a daughter of the air with a hope of a soul. Eliza throws the coats over her brothers and breaks the spell. Karen's soul is carried up to God. A child says what everyone else fears to say about the emperor, and Little Claus drowns his rival in the river.
