A ghost walks the cold battlements
The play begins at night on a platform before the castle of Elsinore. Horatio and Marcellus arrive. Twice already Bernardo and Marcellus have seen a figure on this spot.
Horatio is a scholar, and he calls the story fantasy. Then the ghost appears, in the armour the dead king wore. Horatio trembles and turns pale. He begs it to speak, but a cock crows, and it vanishes like a guilty thing. Horatio says this sight points to some strange trouble coming to Denmark.
The scene sets out the problem of belief that runs through the play. Yet nobody knows what it wants. Horatio decides that the spirit, silent to them, will speak to young Hamlet.
The takeaway is that the play starts with a sight that cannot be trusted or ignored, and everything follows from that.

How it ends (spoiler)
In the last scene, Claudius arranges a fencing match between Hamlet and Laertes, with a poisoned blade and a poisoned cup. Gertrude drinks from the cup and dies. Laertes and Hamlet wound each other with the poisoned sword, and Laertes confesses the plot before he dies. Hamlet kills Claudius, then asks Horatio to live and tell his story. Hamlet dies, and a distant dead march sounds as the curtain descends.
