Стонущие слова in short
Groaning Words is a book of illness and cure. Lü Kun begins with his own sickness and widens it to a sickness of character and of states. Human nature mixes good principle with uneven temperament, so people must work on themselves.
What Стонущие слова is about
Why would a man collect his own groans? Lü Kun, a Chinese official of the Wanli reign in the Ming dynasty, was born frail and often ill. Whenever he fell sick, he wrote down what troubled him and scolded himself for not taking better care.
Over thirty years the notes grew into Groaning Words, a gathering of short sayings, small stories, arguments and advice. The illness he writes about is not only of the body. It is the sickness of bad temper, vanity, laziness, flattery and careless rule. His cure is steady work on the mind, honesty in private and fairness in public. First, we look at why he thinks human nature is a mixture.
Для кого. You will love this book if you enjoy wise, plain-spoken sayings, practical advice on temper and honesty, and sharp views on leadership. It also suits readers curious about Confucian thought and Chinese history.

Human nature mixes principle with temperament
Lü Kun begins with a claim that cuts against a common view. Many scholars, following Mencius, say that human nature is simply good. Lü Kun says nature refers to both vital energy and principle. Principle is never bad, but vital energy is not always good.
He walks through the great authorities one by one. Confucius spoke of natures being near to one another, and near means not the same. Zisi said that cultivating the Way is called education, and Lü Kun asks why the Way would need cultivating if nature were wholly good. His picture is simple. Water has no sediment, but it turns cloudy when soil is added. Nature is one, but it becomes mixed when joined to temperament.
This matters because temperament decides which way a person leans. Lü Kun says vital energy and habit are the two great obstacles for students. If temperament is part of your nature, you cannot blame it on others. You have to find out which way you lean and work against it. Know your own mixture, then correct it.
