Фуэнте Овехуна in short
Fuente Ovejuna follows a farming village under a cruel commander. At first the villagers joke, flirt, argue about love and bring generous gifts. Then they learn what his rule means.
What Фуэнте Овехуна is about
What would you do if the man who rules your village could take any woman he liked, and nobody above him seemed to care? That is the question at the heart of Fuente Ovejuna, a Spanish play in three acts by Lope de Vega, who died in 1635.
It is set in the 1470s, during a struggle over who should rule Castile. Fernán Gómez de Guzmán, a commander of the Order of Calatrava, is a soldier, a lord and a bully. You meet Laurencia, Frondoso, Mengo and the mayor Esteban, and you see a town's patience wear thin until a whole community acts as one.
Для кого. This is for readers who love plays about power and justice, ordinary people standing together, Spanish history, and lively verse full of songs, jokes and sharp argument.

A commander and a young Master meet
The play opens with Fernán Gómez, the Grand Commander, arriving in town with his attendants, Flores and Ortuño. He wants to know whether the young Master of Calatrava respects him. He says courtesy opens hearts and rudeness invites hatred. It is an odd thing to say, given how he behaves later.
The Master, Rodrigo Téllez Girón, greets him warmly and says he honors him like a father. Then comes politics. King Henry IV of Castile has died, and two sides claim the throne. One backs Isabel and Fernando of Aragon. The other backs the king of Portugal. The Commander urges the Master to gather the knights of Calatrava and seize Ciudad Real. The young Master agrees, and says nobody should mistake his youth for weakness.
This opening puts a private bully inside a public war. The Commander belongs to a world where knights fight for kings and expect villages to pay for it. He can call on his vassals in Fuente Ovejuna, farmers with no training in arms.
A man's power over others begins in the habits of the powerful.
