Филиппинские народные сказки in short

Filipino Popular Tales gathers stories written down by students for Dean Spruill Fansler between 1908 and 1914. It moves from comic heroes like Suan and Juan, through strong dwarfs, giants, thieves, and clever girls, to romances, moral sketches, and animal fables. After most tales, a note follows the plot across India, Arabia, Spain, and northern Europe.

What Филиппинские народные сказки is about

Imagine a boy who skips school, climbs a tree by the road, and watches his mother walk home from the market. He tells her what she bought, and she decides he can see hidden things. Soon a princess loses a ring, a king offers her hand, and the boy's life hangs on a guess.

That is the first tale in Filipino Popular Tales, edited by Dean Spruill Fansler and published in 1921. Tellers from many regions recount tales heard from grandmothers, nurses, and farmers, and the credits often identify their regional backgrounds. Fansler adds notes that follow each story to India, Arabia, Spain, and northern Europe.

Для кого. Readers who love fairy tales, tricksters, giants, clever princesses, and talking animals will feel at home here, as will anyone curious about how one story travels between lands.

The story in 10 parts

Luck can make a fool look like a seer

The first tale is told in several forms, and the hero is called Suan or Juan. He is a lazy son who quits school and wants a living without work. His trick is simple. He spies on his mother, then names what she cooked for supper. Neighbors begin to call him a diviner.

In one Tagalog version he hides his father's plough in a creek, draws shapes on paper, and chants a rhyme that points to the hiding place. Word spreads that Suan is good at guessing. Then the king's daughter loses a ring, and the king promises her hand to the finder. Anyone who fails will lose his head. Suan's proud mother volunteers her son without asking him. On the royal carriage ride, Suan cries out that death is at hand, and the coachman, who stole the ring, thinks he has been found out.

Later a rich rival bets a boatload of gold that Suan cannot count the seeds in his melons. Suan rows out to drown himself and overhears the answer from the rival's ship instead. Fansler shows that the tale matches Dr. Knowall in Grimm and stories from Arabia. The joke is that fear can do a man's talking for him. A reputation can grow far bigger than any skill.

How it ends (spoiler)

The book closes with notes and a supplementary bibliography, and its last tale is a comic race. A carabao scorns a turtle, who challenges him over seven hills. The turtle posts a friend on each hilltop, so the carabao finds a rival ahead at every turn. At the seventh hill the furious carabao kicks the turtle, whose shell is unharmed, but the blow splits the carabao's own hoof.

Вопросы о книге Филиппинские народные сказки

Who collected the tales in Filipino Popular Tales?

Dean Spruill Fansler edited them. The tales were collected between 1908 and 1914, and the book credits tellers, often identifying their province or community. It was published in 1921.

Are the stories really Filipino or borrowed from elsewhere?

Both. Fansler shows that many tales share plots with Grimm, India, and Arabia, but local details make them Filipino. He weighs which are native, meaning present before the Spaniards arrived, and which were imported.

Who are Suan and Juan in these tales?

They are common hero names. Suan or Juan may be a lazy trickster, a poor woodcutter, or a clever servant, and the same name appears in many different plots across the book.
