Отцы и дети in short

Fathers and Sons follows a young graduate, Arkady, and his friend Bazarov as they visit a country estate, a provincial town, a grand widow's house and a doctor's cottage. Bazarov is a Nihilist, a man who accepts nothing without proof. His creed collides first with Arkady's uncle Paul, who stands for tradition and dignity.

What Отцы и дети is about

What happens when a young man comes home from university sure that everything old is rubbish, and brings a friend who says so out loud? In May 1859, Nikolai Petrovitch Kirsanov waits at a posting station for his son Arkady. The son arrives with Bazarov, a medical student who believes in nothing he cannot test.

Fathers and Sons was written by Ivan Turgenev and published in 1862. It is set just before the emancipation of the serfs, when everyone disagreed about where Russia should go. Turgenev names the new type the Nihilist and shows the idea meeting real people and real feelings.

Для кого. Readers who love family drama, sharp arguments and Russian country life will enjoy this novel. It suits anyone curious about how each generation sees the one before it.

A father waits on a bench for his son

The novel opens on May 20, 1859, at a posting station. Nikolai Petrovitch Kirsanov, a gray, slightly lame landowner of about forty-four, sits on a bench and asks his servant Peter whether the carriage is in sight. Turgenev uses the wait to tell Nikolai's life. He married for love, lost his wife in 1847, and turned to estate reform. His one pride is his son Arkady.

The meeting is warm but awkward. Nikolai runs forward and kisses his dusty son. Arkady introduces Bazarov, a tall man in a long coat who pauses before offering his bare red hand.

On the drive home, Nikolai confesses that a young woman named Fenichka now lives in the house. Arkady feels a thrill of superiority and tells him to say no more.

The clash begins not with a quarrel but with a father who wants closeness and a son who thinks he has outgrown it.
