Эванжелина in short
Evangeline tells of a woman whose life is cut in two by a royal decree. In Grand-Pré she is betrothed to Gabriel, surrounded by a trusting community. Then the village is condemned, her father dies on the shore and the houses burn.
What Эванжелина is about
What happens to a village when a king decides it must disappear? Longfellow answers with a love story. On the evening Evangeline Bellefontaine signs her marriage contract with Gabriel Lajeunesse, English ships already lie anchored in the bay of Grand-Pré.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow published Evangeline in 1847. It is a narrative poem in unrhymed lines, built on the forced removal of the Acadians, French-speaking farmers of what is now Nova Scotia. You follow one young woman from the betrothal feast to a search that carries her down the Mississippi and into the northern forests.
Для кого. You will enjoy this poem if you love sweeping love stories, journeys across wild landscapes, tales of faith under pressure, or stories that sound best read aloud.

Grand-Pré is a village of open doors
The poem opens in Grand-Pré, a village beside the Minas Basin. The farmers have built dikes to hold back the tides, and they let the sea onto the meadows only at set times. Their houses are sturdy, framed in oak and chestnut.
Longfellow stresses how peaceful these people are. They keep no locks on their doors and no bars on their windows. The richest live simply, and the poorest have plenty. Each evening the Angelus bell rings, and smoke rises from a hundred hearths like incense.
The poem then narrows to one farm. Benedict Bellefontaine is the wealthiest farmer in the village, a hale man of seventy. His daughter Evangeline, seventeen, runs his household. Many young men knock at her door, but only one is welcome. That one is Gabriel, son of Basil the blacksmith. The two grew up together, and now their friendship has turned to love.
A way of life built on trust, shared work and prayer is shown in full before anything touches it.
Before you can mourn a place, you have to be allowed to love it.

Вопросы о книге Эванжелина
What is Evangeline about?
It tells of Evangeline Bellefontaine, a young Acadian woman whose village is destroyed and whose betrothed, Gabriel, is taken from her. She spends years traveling across North America to find him, held up by faith and love.
Who are the Acadians in Evangeline?
They are French-speaking farmers who settled in the region of Nova Scotia. The poem shows them as a peaceful farming community that British authorities force onto ships, scattering families along the coasts of North America.
Is Evangeline based on a true story?
The poem is fiction, but it rests on the real removal of the Acadian people in the 1750s. Longfellow published it in 1847, and its heroine, Evangeline, is his own invention.
Is Evangeline easy to read aloud?
Its long, flowing lines have a steady rhythm, and its vivid pictures of farms, rivers and storms are easy to follow by ear. The story moves in clear stages from place to place, which helps listeners.
What is the main message of Evangeline?
The poem celebrates patient, faithful love and the strength found in faith. It suggests that devotion keeps its worth even through loss, and that a lost home lives on in the stories people tell.
