Euthyphro in short
Euthyphro is a short conversation with a clear line of argument. Socrates meets a man certain that prosecuting his father is pious, and he asks for a definition. Five answers follow.
What Euthyphro is about
What is piety? A man is about to prosecute his own father for murder, and he is sure he knows. Then Socrates asks him to say exactly what piety is, and the certainty starts to slip.
That question drives Euthyphro, a short dialogue by Plato, probably written after the death of Socrates in 399 BC. It takes place on the porch of the King Archon, where Socrates answers a charge of impiety and Euthyphro charges his father. You get a close look at how Socrates questions, five tested definitions, and a puzzle about goodness and the gods that thinkers still debate.
Для кого. This book suits readers who enjoy a sharp conversation, anyone curious about how to define words like justice and goodness, and listeners who like to watch a clever mind take an idea apart.

Socrates arrives at court with a charge of his own
The dialogue opens on the porch of the King Archon, where Euthyphro is surprised to see Socrates. He asks why Socrates has left his usual haunt at the Lyceum. He guesses someone must have charged him. A young man named Meletus has done just that.
Socrates describes Meletus with dry humor. He is a little-known man with a beaklike nose, long straight hair, and a thin, patchy beard. Socrates pretends to admire him as a good farmer who clears away the people who damage the young shoots. The praise is irony, and Euthyphro hears it that way.
The charge concerns the gods. Meletus says that Socrates invents new gods and denies the old. Euthyphro says people laugh at him too when he speaks about divine matters. He believes the crowd is simply jealous.
Socrates answers that laughter is not the danger. The Athenians grow angry when a man starts sharing his wisdom. Euthyphro, ever cheerful, predicts that the case will come to nothing and that he will win his own.
This opening places a man accused of impiety beside a man who claims to know exactly what impiety is. The question arrives with a trial hanging over it.

Вопросы о книге Euthyphro
What is Plato's Euthyphro about?
Euthyphro is a conversation between Socrates and a man named Euthyphro, who is prosecuting his father for murder. Socrates asks him to define piety, and five answers are tested, each one examined and set aside.
What is the Euthyphro problem?
It is the question Socrates asks about the gods and the holy. Is the holy loved by the gods because it is holy, or is it holy because they love it? It is used to ask whether morality depends on divine command.
Who are Euthyphro and Meletus?
Euthyphro is a self-assured Athenian who claims exact knowledge of religion and is charging his own father. Meletus is the young man who has accused Socrates of impiety and of corrupting the young.
When was Euthyphro written, and is it a true story?
Plato wrote it in the early fourth century BC, after the time of Socrates. It is a literary dialogue, not a record, though it is set around the real indictment of Socrates in Athens.
Is Euthyphro easy to follow for a first-time reader?
Yes, in the sense that matters. It is a short conversation between two people, in plain question and answer, with jokes and everyday comparisons such as horses, hunters, and scales, so each step can be followed by ear.
