Ethan Frome in short

Ethan Frome is the story of a winter in a poor New England village, told by a visitor who has pieced it together from rumor and one night in a farmhouse kitchen. A good man is married to a sickly wife, loves her young cousin, and cannot find a way to be with her or to leave. Each turn tightens the net.

What Ethan Frome is about

What would make a man look dead and in hell while he is still alive? That question grips a young engineer stuck in Starkfield, Massachusetts, for one winter. Every day he watches Ethan Frome drag himself across the post office pavement, stiff and grizzled, with a limp that checks each step like a tug on a chain. Everyone knows the man, and nobody can explain his face.

Ethan Frome is a short novel by Edith Wharton, published in 1911. A visitor gathers what the villagers know, and then the book steps back to the winter when Ethan was twenty-eight, married to a sickly wife, and in love with her young cousin. You get the people, the choices that close around them, and the ideas under the scenes.

Для кого. Readers who love compact, atmospheric novels about quiet people facing hardship will enjoy this story. It suits those drawn to love bound by duty, where weather and household objects say as much as words.

The story in 8 parts

A stranger pieces together a ruined man's story

The book opens with an unnamed narrator, an engineer stranded in Starkfield for most of the winter by a carpenters' strike. He learns about Ethan Frome bit by bit, and each teller tells it differently.

His first source is Harmon Gow, a former stage driver who knows every family. Harmon says Ethan has looked this way since an accident twenty-four years ago. When the narrator says Ethan already looks dead, Harmon answers that he has spent too many winters in Starkfield. That phrase stays with the narrator. His landlady, Mrs. Ned Hale, can recite every neighbor's troubles, but about the Fromes she goes silent. Her silence says more than her stories.

Then chance brings him closer. Ethan drives him in a sleigh every day for a week, and says almost nothing. Yet small things break through. He once saw Florida, and the memory is now snowed under. One night a storm blinds them on the way home, and Ethan offers a bed. As they step into the kitchen, a complaining voice falls silent.

A story that every teller shapes differently can only be understood by listening for what each one leaves out.

Ethan watches Mattie dance and walks her home

How it ends (spoiler)

Ethan steers the sled straight at the big elm so that he and Mattie will never have to part. At the last moment Zeena's face seems to rise before him, the sled swerves, and they crash but live. Ethan is left lame and scarred, and Mattie is badly crippled. Twenty-four years later, the narrator learns that the two women now share Ethan's kitchen. Zeena, silent and bony, cares for them both, while the complaining voice belongs to Mattie.
