Римские элегии in short
Erotica Romana is a sequence of twenty-four short poems that explores love in Rome through myth, art and everyday encounters. It opens with a garden and a guardian god, moves through the silence of the city, the humble doorway and the escape from fame, and ends where it began, with Priapus in his corner. What you keep is a way of seeing.
What Римские элегии is about
Picture a poet who comes to a city of ruins to study its stones and finds that the stones will not speak. The streets are silent and the palaces give him no word. Then a humble doorway opens, and the whole city begins to make sense.
That is the situation of Erotica Romana, also known as the Roman Elegies, by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. These twenty-four short poems mix Roman settings, myth, art and erotic love. You will hear how a northern scholar becomes a lover, and how love and learning feed each other. Begin in a garden, with a guardian at the poet's side.
Для кого. You will love this if you enjoy candid love poetry, ancient myth retold with humour, travel in Rome, or the way a great novelist turns to verse.

A poet plants a garden and posts a guardian
The sequence opens with a garden. The speaker says he planted it himself and tends the blossoms of love as his muse teaches him. The garden stands for the poems and for the life behind them.
Beside him he places a guardian, the old garden god Priapus, a rustic figure of fertility. Such wooden gods were set among vines to frighten off thieves. The poet speaks to him like a neighbour. Yet he does not fear thieves. Anyone who wants to eat may pluck freely. What he fears are the hypocrites, weakened by shame and a guilty conscience, who peer over the wall and sneer at nature's pure fruit.
For those peeping critics he asks the god for a rough punishment. The joke is crude on purpose. It tells us the poet will write about the body openly, and he dares the squeamish to go home.
The last poem of the sequence returns to this same Priapus, now standing in a corner of the garden. Cucumber vines coil around him and crows settle on his head. The book is built as a ring, and it begins and ends with the same figure.
Expect a poet who is proud of his pleasures, who mocks the prudish, and who treats desire as natural as fruit on a branch.
The opening garden is a warning to hypocrites and an invitation to anyone who will read with an open mind.

Вопросы о книге Римские элегии
What is Erotica Romana about?
It is a sequence of twenty-four love poems set in Rome. A visiting poet finds a Roman lover, learns the city through her, and mixes desire with art, ancient myth, secrecy and the fear of illness.
Who wrote Erotica Romana and when?
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote it after his Italian journey, which began in 1786. The poems join classical mythology with candid accounts of love, secrecy, artistic discovery and life in Rome.
Who is Priapus in the first and last poems?
Priapus is an old Roman garden god of fertility. He stands as guardian of the poet's garden at the start and speaks for himself at the end, so the book forms a ring.
Why does the poet mention Werther in Erotica Romana?
Goethe's novel The Sorrows of Young Werther had made him known across Europe. In the fourth poem the speaker jokes that in Rome he enjoys being unknown, and that Werther would be better forgotten.
Is Erotica Romana easy to read?
The poems are short, vivid and full of small scenes such as a tavern table, a lamp and a scarecrow. Each one stands alone, so you can read a poem at a time and enjoy it.
