Божественная комедия (полный текст в переводе Лонгфелло) in short

The Divine Comedy tells of one man's journey through the three realms of the afterlife. He starts lost in a forest, goes down through Hell with Virgil to the bottom of the universe, climbs the mountain of Purgatory, and is brought by Beatrice up through the heavens. What you keep is a set of living scenes.

What Божественная комедия (полный текст в переводе Лонгфелло) is about

Halfway through life, a man wakes in a dark forest and cannot find the path. A panther, a lion, and a she-wolf block his climb toward a sunlit hill. Then a stranger appears, hoarse from long silence, and says he is Virgil, the Roman poet.

Dante Alighieri wrote the Divine Comedy in Italian in the early 1300s, while living in exile from Florence. It has three parts, Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso, and a hundred cantos in all. You will go down through Hell, up a mountain of repentance, and out through the heavens, meeting lovers, popes, sailors, and neighbors on the way. Begin where Dante does, lost in the forest.

Для кого. Readers who love journeys, vivid characters, and big questions about love, justice, and choice will find a home here, along with anyone drawn to medieval Italy and stories where every scene carries meaning.

A lost traveler meets Virgil in the forest

The poem opens with a man halfway through life who wakes in a dark forest. The place frightens him so much that even telling of it renews his fear. At the foot of a hill he sees sunlight, but a panther, a lion, and a gaunt she-wolf drive him back toward the dark.

A figure appears, hoarse from a long silence. He says he lived in Rome under Augustus and sang of the hero who fled burning Troy. The traveler knows him at once as Virgil, the poet he loves. Virgil says the wolf lets no one pass, so another road is needed. It runs through the eternal place, and a worthier soul must guide him farther. When the traveler doubts he deserves the journey, Virgil tells how Beatrice came down from Heaven and asked him to help.

The traveler cannot escape the forest alone, and he cannot go around the danger. When you are lost, accept a guide and walk the road through the trouble.
