Дхаммапада in short
The Dhammapada gathers 423 short verses in twenty-six chapters, each built around a single theme. Its argument begins with the mind. What we think shapes what we say and do, and our deeds bring back their own results.
What Дхаммапада is about
Picture a cart pulled by an ox. Wherever the animal puts its foot, the wheel follows. The Dhammapada opens with this picture and says that pain follows an evil thought as surely as the wheel follows the foot.
Then it gives a second picture. A pure thought brings happiness, and happiness follows it like a shadow that never leaves. The Dhammapada is a collection of 423 short verses in twenty-six chapters, and no single author is known. The tradition holds that the verses preserve the teaching of the Buddha. You will hear what it teaches about the mind, deeds, desire and the path.
Для кого. This book is for readers who love short, memorable sayings, anyone drawn to Buddhist teaching, and those who want calm, practical guidance on anger, desire, friendship and self-mastery.

A path of verses gathered from the Buddha's teaching
The Dhammapada is one of the best-loved books of the Buddhist tradition. It was first kept in Pali, an ancient Indian language used in the early Buddhist scriptures. Believers and scholars alike treat its verses as sayings gathered from the teaching of the Buddha, the Awakened One. The person who put them together is not known.
The book is arranged by theme, not by story. It has twenty-six chapters, and each one gathers verses around a single subject. There are chapters called Thought, The Fool, The Wise Person, Anger, Old Age, Happiness, Thirst, The Way and The Brahmana.
Many verses set two things side by side to show how they differ. The wise person and the fool, the earnest and the heedless, the guarded mind and the wandering mind stand in pairs. This makes the verses easy to remember. A listener could hold one verse in mind all day and test it against what happened.
A few terms return again and again. Mara is the tempter, who stands for everything that pulls a person off the path. Nirvana is the highest peace, the end of craving and suffering. An Arhat is a venerable one who has reached the goal. The Law means the teaching of the Buddha.
Because each chapter stands alone, a reader can begin anywhere and still find a complete thought. The Dhammapada is a collection of themed verses that you can open anywhere and understand.

What does Dhammapada mean?
The name is usually read as the path of the law, or the path of the teaching. Dhamma means the Buddha's teaching, and pada can mean a path or a step, so the title points to a practical way of living.
Who wrote the Dhammapada and when?
No author is named. Buddhist tradition holds that the verses come from the teaching of the Buddha and were gathered by early followers, kept first in Pali. The book is ancient, and its exact date of collection is not certain.

What is the main message of the Dhammapada?
The mind shapes our lives, so train it. Avoid harm, answer hatred with love, let go of craving, keep good company and walk the path with your own effort. Peace comes from inner discipline, not outward show.
