«Демонология» in short
Demonologia is a vast gathering of the ways people have tried to see ahead, heal themselves and explain what frightens them. Forsyth's steady claim is that most of this grew from ignorance, appetite for wonder, fear and the interest of those who profited. He also gives weight to the other side, quoting believers at length.
What «Демонология» is about
What would you do if a charge of theft meant carrying a red-hot iron bar in your bare hand? For centuries, judges and priests called that a judgment of God. J. S. Forsyth opens his Demonologia with this kind of scene, then gathers the odd beliefs of many ages into one crowded volume.
The book works like a dictionary of fears and hopes, with entries on astrology, amulets, alchemy, magic, oracles, dreams, ghosts, witches, demons and the Inquisition. You get a tour of how people tried to read the future, cure illness and explain terror.
Для кого. This book will delight readers who love curiosities, folklore, ghost stories, witch trials and the history of religion and science, and anyone who enjoys sharp-tongued commentary on human belief.

Ordeals served as crude law in unlettered ages
Forsyth begins with the trials that once decided guilt. Suspects held red-hot bars, plunged an arm into boiling water, or walked blindfold among burning plowshares. Priests ran the rites with prayers, and everyone called the result a judgment of God. Forsyth sees them as the rough law of people with no written code.
Some cases are almost comic. Pepin the Short settled a quarrel between a bishop and an abbot by making two men stretch out their arms in the shape of a cross, and the first to tire lost the case.
The tests were also gamed. A burned hand was bandaged and sealed for three days, so a healthy body could heal before anyone looked. The accused could strike a deal with the priest, and cold iron might replace hot. Single combat favored the fierce rather than the honest.
Whenever a ritual feels like proof, ask who controls the conditions. A trial is only as fair as the people who arrange it.

Вопросы о книге «Демонология»
What is Demonologia about?
It is a dictionary-style collection of old superstitions and their histories. Entries cover ordeals, astrology, amulets, alchemy, magic, divination, dreams, ghosts, witches, demons, the Inquisition, saints and relics, with stories, quotations and Forsyth's own comments.
Who was J. S. Forsyth?
J. S. Forsyth is the author and compiler of the book. The text shows a widely read writer with a rationalist, Protestant outlook who gathered traditions and anecdotes from earlier authors, though little else about his life is given here.
What was the Demon of Tedworth?
It is a famous haunting story from 1661. After Mr. Monpesson took a drum from a vagrant drummer, his Wiltshire house echoed with drumming, scratching and moving objects. Forsyth reprints the full account and invites readers to weigh it.
Is Demonologia a true account of real beliefs?
Yes, in the sense that it records real customs, trials and writings, many with named people and places. Forsyth draws on authors like Cicero, Bacon and Scot, and gives his own opinion on whether the stories are credible.
What is the main message of the book?
Forsyth argues that superstition thrives on fear, wonder and the profit of those who exploit it. He urges readers to test claims by reason and experience, and to see old beliefs as part of human history.
