Христианская наука in short

The book is a satirical look at one religion and one woman. It starts with a farce, a man with broken bones and a healer who says he has none, and it ends with a sober challenge about public honesty. Twain argues that faith in the healer can be a real force, that the Science claims too much, and that its organization explains its growth.

What Христианская наука is about

What happens when a man with a body full of broken bones is told that bones, pain and hunger do not exist? Mark Twain opens this book with that very scene. He sets it in an Austrian farmhouse in 1899, where a Christian Science healer from Boston arrives to treat a fall from a cliff.

The first part mixes farce with a look at why the new religion draws people, how it handles money, and why it will spread. The second part turns to its founder, Mary Baker Eddy, judged only by her own words, acts and church laws. Twain published it in 1907, and you get a sharp, funny reading of the movement.

Для кого. Readers who love pointed wit, thoughtful satire and Mark Twain at his sharpest will enjoy this book. It suits those curious about religion, belief, money and power.

A fall from a cliff meets a healer

Twain begins with a joke that works as an argument. He says he walks off a cliff near Vienna in 1899 and breaks nearly everything a body can break. A Christian Science healer from Boston is sent for, and she sends word that he should stay calm and remember that nothing is wrong with him.

The next morning she arrives, a large, bony widow named Mrs. Fuller. She will not look at his tongue or take his pulse, because those belong to the body. She says hunger, thirst and pain do not exist, so he is refused food and drink.

Twain takes her rules seriously and pushes them until they trip. She scrapes her hand on a pin and says Ouch. Then the maid steps on the cat's tail, and the healer insists a cat cannot feel pain. A creed that cannot survive a pinprick owes its listeners a better explanation.

Вопросы о книге Христианская наука

What is Mark Twain's Christian Science about?

It is a satire in two parts. The first mixes a comic tale of a healer in Austria with essays on why the faith appeals to people. The second examines Mary Baker Eddy, her writing, and the bylaws of her church.

Who is Mrs. Eddy in Christian Science?

Mary Baker Eddy was the founder of the Christian Science church and author of its textbook, Science and Health, with Key to the Scriptures. Twain studies her through her own writings, her bylaws and the church she organized in Boston.

Did Mark Twain write Christian Science as a serious work or a joke?

It is both. The humor is real and constant, but Twain also makes careful arguments about the power of belief, church finance and one-person rule, and he grants the comfort the faith gives to its sincere members.

What is the main message of Christian Science by Mark Twain?

Twain argues that belief can ease real suffering, but that a faith claiming to cure everything claims too much, and that money and unchecked authority deserve scrutiny in any church, however kind its message.
