Чары in short

Charms follows a mind from waking to action. Dawn begins in the soul at sunrise, and the poems that follow try on voices: a tree, columns, a queen on her tower, Narcissus by his spring, a priestess, a serpent. Between them stand small poems about a bee, a footstep and a sleeper.

What Чары is about

What happens in a mind in the first minutes after sleep? Paul Valéry opens this book with that question.

Charms is a collection of twenty-two poems by the French poet Paul Valéry, first published in 1922 after years in which he had written almost no verse. Some poems are spoken by a tree, a column, a serpent or a priestess. Others are a few lines about a bee, a footstep or a belt. Together they ask how thought takes shape in words, and how sound and image can carry what argument cannot.

Для кого. This book suits readers who love the sound and shine of poems, who enjoy myth retold with a modern mind, and who like to hear a poet think about beauty, silence, the sea and the self.

The 7 key ideas

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

Poetry begins when the waking mind stirs

The first poem, Dawn, is a small drama of waking. The speaker leaves a confused sleep behind as the sun rises like a rose. He steps into his own soul with confidence and calls this the first prayer.

The poem gives thought a body. Over the hills, ideas stir in groups like women waking. The speaker scolds them as bored mistresses of the soul. They answer that they were never far away. All night they were secret spiders, weaving a hundred thousand silk suns over his enigmas.

Then comes the turn that sets the tone of the whole book. He breaks their web. Pure reasoning is not what he wants at dawn. He goes instead into his sensual forest to look for the oracles of his song. The whole soul becomes a universal ear and listens to its own trembling.

Valéry does not hide the risk. Plundering a world leaves a wound, yet the wound bears fruit, and the poet's own blood proves he owns what he took. These poems do not argue a case. They follow a mind as it chooses images over proofs and lets the feeling of depth stand for what cannot be said plainly.

The takeaway is that Valéry treats a poem as the moment when waking thought turns into song.

Вопросы о книге Чары

What is Charms by Paul Valéry about?

It is a collection of lyric poems on the waking mind, myth, beauty, silence and the self. Speakers include a plane tree, Narcissus, a queen, a priestess and a serpent, and the book ends with the sea and a palm.

What is The Marine Cemetery about?

A speaker stands in a seaside graveyard at noon and ponders death, time and the soul. Stillness gives way to a rising wind and a choice to live and act, which makes it the book's centerpiece.

Who is Narcissus in Valéry's poem?

He is the young man of Greek myth who loves his own reflection in a spring. In Valéry's version he speaks at length, and the poem becomes a study of consciousness looking at itself.

When was Charms written and published?

The poems were gathered and published in French in 1922, after Valéry had written little verse for years. Some pieces, such as Sketch of a Serpent and The Marine Cemetery, were written earlier and belong with the others.

How should I read Valéry's poems?

Read them aloud, one scene at a time, and let the images lead. Short poems like The Bee and The Footsteps are easy entrances, and the longer poems open up once you know the myth behind them.
