Капитан Блад in short

Captain Blood follows one man's fall and climb. Peter Blood begins as a doctor who wants only peace. An act of kindness makes him a convict, a slave and an outlaw, and he becomes a pirate leader whose strict code sets him apart on the Spanish Main.

What Капитан Блад is about

A doctor waters his geraniums while a rebel army marches past his window. By the next morning he is under arrest, and within months he is sold into slavery for ten pounds. How does a man so set on a quiet life end up flying a pirate flag across the Caribbean?

Captain Blood is an adventure novel by Rafael Sabatini, told as if drawn from the logbooks of Jeremy Pitt, the hero's closest friend. It follows Peter Blood, an Irish physician, from Somerset in 1685 to Barbados, Tortuga and the rich Spanish towns of the Main. You get the whole tale, with its duels, sea battles, daring tricks and a tense love story.

Для кого. Readers who love swashbuckling sea adventures will enjoy clever heroes who triumph through wit and swordplay. Fans of bluffs on the Spanish Main and romance shaped by pride will love it too.

A doctor who minds his geraniums

In July 1685, the Duke of Monmouth has landed to claim the English crown, and the men of Bridgewater march to join him with scythes and clubs. Peter Blood watches from his window, smoking his pipe and tending his flowers.

Blood is no coward. He has served under the Dutch admiral de Ruyter, spent two years in a Spanish prison and fought for France. He has simply seen enough of war, and he thinks Monmouth's claim is a lie. His neighbours glare at him because he will not fight, but he does not care.

He sleeps through the battle of Sedgemoor. At four in the morning a hammering wakes him. Young Jeremy Pitt, a ship's master, stands at the door covered in dust and begs him to come to a wounded rebel, Lord Gildoy. Blood sees a simple call of duty. The narrator sees the messenger of Fate.

A man who stands aside from other people's quarrels can still be swept into them by a single knock at the door.

Is Captain Blood a true story?

It is a novel, though it uses real history, including Monmouth's rebellion of 1685, Judge Jeffreys and the deportation of rebels to the West Indies. Peter Blood himself is invented, though the tale claims to draw on a ship's log.

Who is Colonel Bishop?
