Bleak House in short
Bleak House is built around one idea: a court that delays everything can poison everything. The case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce touches the rich, the poor and the middle ranks alike. It makes Richard restless, and it keeps Miss Flite waiting on judgment.
What Bleak House is about
Can a lawsuit outlive everyone who starts it? In Bleak House, it does. Jarndyce and Jarndyce has run so long that children are born into it and old people die out of it, and nobody can say what it means.
Charles Dickens wrote this novel in the early 1850s, and it came out in monthly parts. He wanted readers to see a court that wore people out while it promised justice. You get a sharp narrator who moves from courtrooms to slums, and Esther Summerson, a shy orphan who tells her own part of the tale.
Для кого. This is for readers who love big Victorian novels with a huge cast, mysteries that tie strangers together, sharp comedy, and a warm heart beneath the satire.

Fog and mud hide the Court of Chancery
The novel opens in London in November, with mud in the streets and smoke sinking from the chimneys. Fog lies on the river and the ships. At the heart of it sits the Lord High Chancellor in his High Court of Chancery.
Dickens treats the weather as a picture of the court. The fog is thick and so is the confusion inside, where candles burn dim. The case is Jarndyce and Jarndyce, so tangled that the people in it understand it least of all. The little plaintiff who was promised a rocking horse when it ended has grown up, bought a real horse and ridden into the next world.
Around the lawyers stand the people the case has used up. A mad old woman attends every day with her documents, which are paper matches and dried lavender. A man from Shropshire waits to cry out to the Chancellor, who looks right past him.
A system built to delay can slowly corrupt everyone it touches.

- John Jarndyce The kind, gruff master of Bleak House who takes in Esther, Ada and Richard and hates being thanked.
- Ada Clare A gentle, golden-haired orphan and ward of the Court who loves her cousin Richard and trusts everyone.
- Richard Carstone Ada's cheerful, restless cousin who cannot settle on a career and pins his hopes on the lawsuit.
- Lady Dedlock The cool, admired wife of Sir Leicester, who hides a secret behind her bored, perfect manner.

- Jo A homeless crossing sweeper who knows nothing, wants only to be left alone, and is always told to move on.
- Mrs. Jellyby A busy reformer who devotes herself to Africa while her own children go unwashed.
How it ends (spoiler)
Esther marries Allan Woodcourt, and Mr. Jarndyce gives them a second Bleak House as a home. The great lawsuit ends because the whole estate has been eaten up by costs, and Richard dies soon after, with Ada and her baby son left in the care of the family. Lady Dedlock, Esther's mother, is found dead at the graveyard gate. Sir Leicester lives on, loyal to her memory. Esther ends as a wife and mother, still modest and still happy.
