Black Beauty in short
Black Beauty follows one horse through a life of changing owners. He starts in a safe meadow, learns his work from a patient master, and finds a happy home at Birtwick Park. Then he is passed along, through tight reins, bad drivers, a ruinous ride and the working days of a London cab horse.
What Black Beauty is about
What would a horse say about the people who drive him, feed him, whip him and pat him? Black Beauty answers in his own voice. He tells his whole life, from a sunny meadow where his mother teaches him good manners to the stables and roads where he works for masters of every kind.
Anna Sewell published the book in 1877, the year before she died. She wrote it in poor health with one aim, to move readers to treat horses with kindness and good sense. She lets the horse speak, and what he describes is the check rein, the whip, the overloaded cart and the drunk driver. You meet gentle John Manly, fiery Ginger, cheerful Merrylegs and the cabman Jerry Barker.
Для кого. This book suits readers who love animals, warm family stories and tales told by one honest voice. It also rewards anyone drawn to Victorian England and to stories about kindness and fairness.

A gentle colt learns what kindness feels like
The story opens in a wide meadow with a pond, fir trees and a brook. The narrator is a dull black colt who runs beside his mother, Duchess, all day. The first pages are full of grass, shade and safety.
When the older colts play roughly, Duchess calls her son aside. She tells him he comes from good stock. She asks him to work willingly, lift his feet when he trots, and never bite or kick, even in play. He keeps her words for life.
The farmer shows what a good master looks like. He speaks kindly to his horses, and when a plowboy throws stones at the colts, he sends him off the farm. Then a hunt races across the field. A young rider dies, and a horse with a broken leg is shot. Duchess cannot see why men love a sport that ruins good horses.
What a young creature sees in its first home shapes everything it carries after.

Вопросы о книге Black Beauty
What is Black Beauty about?
It is the life story of a horse, told in his own words. He moves from a happy meadow to many owners, meeting kind and cruel people and learning how treatment shapes a horse's character.
Why is the horse called Black Beauty?
His first master calls him Darkie because he is a dull black. At Birtwick Park the squire and his wife name him Black Beauty because he is as black as ebony, with a sweet, good-tempered face.
Is Black Beauty a true story?
No, it is a novel, though it is based on real practices of its day such as the check rein, docked tails and overworked cab horses. Anna Sewell published it in 1877.
What is a check rein and why does the book object to it?
A check rein pulls a horse's head back and up, mainly for show. Beauty and Ginger describe how it strains the neck, tires the back, and makes breathing and pulling harder.
Is Black Beauty easy to read?
Yes, the language is plain and the chapters are short, each telling one clear episode. A friendly narrator explains any stable terms, and the animals' conversations make it easy to follow.
