Barry Lyndon in short

Barry Lyndon follows a poor Irish boy who is sure he is born to greatness. A duel, a lost love and a fool's pride send him into the English and Prussian armies. He escapes by trickery, joins his gambling uncle and lives by cards at the courts of Europe.

What Barry Lyndon is about

What if the hero of a book tells you he is a gentleman, a soldier, a lover and a leader of fashion, and every page quietly shows you something else? That is the game of Barry Lyndon. Redmond Barry is an Irish boy with a fine sword and an even finer opinion of himself.

William Makepeace Thackeray wrote it in the 1840s as a made-up memoir, with an editor who adds notes that doubt the hero's claims. Redmond fights duels, serves in two armies, cheats at cards in royal courts and marries one of the richest women in England. You also get a sharp lesson in how a man lies to himself.

Для кого. For readers who enjoy a charming rascal telling his own story, with sword fights, card tables, royal courts and sly comedy. It suits anyone who likes adventure and sharp satire.

The story in 10 parts

A boy who boasts of kings and castles

Redmond Barry opens his memoirs by announcing that the Barrys are the oldest and noblest family in Ireland. He says a woman once cost them everything, when a chief's daughter betrayed her own people's plot and the estate passed to an Englishman named Lyndon. Redmond tells it as a sacred wrong. Much later, he sets out to take that fortune back by marriage.

His father, Roaring Harry Barry, is a charming horseman and spendthrift who dies suddenly at the Chester races and leaves little beyond debts. Redmond's mother then takes her small son to her brother's home at Castle Brady, where the welcome soon cools.

Redmond's mother is proud, vain and fierce for her boy. She dresses him in velvet and lace, names their small house Barryville and will not let anyone see how poor they are. The boy learns that a good story about yourself can feed you when money cannot.

The editor soon notes that Barry's grandfather was simply an attorney who made his own money.

Redmond's pride in his blood is the first thing he sells you, and the first thing to doubt.

Вопросы о книге Barry Lyndon

What is Barry Lyndon about?

It tells the life of Redmond Barry, an Irish adventurer in the 1700s who fights duels, serves in two armies, gambles at royal courts and marries a rich countess. He tells it himself, in a boastful voice.

Is Barry Lyndon based on a true story?

No. It is a made-up memoir by William Makepeace Thackeray, first published in the 1840s. It draws on real history, such as the Seven Years' War and the courts of Europe, and on the style of real adventurers' memoirs.

Is Barry Lyndon easy to follow?

Yes, in its way. Redmond's lively, chatty voice and quick adventures keep each chapter moving, and the story runs in a clear order from his Irish boyhood to his marriage and the troubles that follow.

What is the main message of Barry Lyndon?

A man who builds his life on boasting, borrowed titles and the use of others will not keep what he wins. The book also shows how a vain narrator can fool himself while the page tells the truth.
