Верования и магия банту in short
Hobley's book argues that the Kikuyu and Kamba live inside a complete system of belief. Ancestral spirits, a high god, sacred fig trees, sacrifice, curses and magic all work together. Thahu, kirume and oaths turn those rules into a code that guides behavior and settles disputes.
What Верования и магия банту is about
What does a man do when the fire goes out in every one of his huts on the same night? He calls the elders, they kill a male sheep, and they sprinkle its stomach contents on each hearth. This is one of hundreds of small rites set down by C. W. Hobley, a British officer in East Africa who found he could not govern sensibly without knowing what the people around him believed.
Bantu Beliefs and Magic gathers what he learned among the Kikuyu and Kamba of what is now Kenya. He sat with elders, worked with an interpreter named Juma bin Hamis, and was accepted as an elder among the Kikuyu. You will meet ancestral spirits, sacred fig trees, sacrifices, curses, smiths, oaths and councils of elders. The book carries the views of its own time, and it keeps a rich record of rites and sayings.
Для кого. Readers who enjoy field notes from a vanished world, comparative religion, folklore, the study of ritual and law, and East African history.

Hobley sets out to study belief as a system
Hobley opens with a plain claim. Peoples who follow neither Christianity nor Islam are not simply pagans. In his view they hold a natural religion, and it has its own logic.
He came to this through work. As an administrator among the tribes of Kavirondo and then Ukamba, he saw that law, land and daily life were bound up with ritual. Language was his first obstacle, and interpreters could miss the spirit of a question. So he valued Juma bin Hamis, who went off to find the right elder whenever a point was unclear.
He warns his own kind that a European raised among complex religions is tempted to read too much into a ceremony. He may also miss a small detail that matters deeply to the worshipper. Understanding what people fear and hope for helps officials, settlers and missionaries deal with them fairly. Careful listening is the foundation of the whole book.
