Дневник Амиеля in short

Amiel's Journal is the record of a mind that sees everything and finds it hard to choose. An orphaned Genevan, trained in Berlin, comes home to a city that shuts him out. He turns inward and writes for more than thirty years about thought, will, faith, nature, music, books and his own failures.

What Дневник Амиеля is about

What happens to a gifted man who cannot bring himself to act? Henri-Frédéric Amiel, a professor in Geneva, spent more than thirty years answering that question in a private journal of about 17,000 manuscript pages.

Amiel lived from 1821 to 1881. He published little, and his friends thought he had wasted his talent. After his death, friends chose passages from the journal, and readers across Europe found in it an honest portrait of a modern mind. You meet the orphan, the professor shut out of his own city, and the thinker dazzled by the infinite.

Для кого. You will love this book if you enjoy honest self-portraits, quiet reflection, and sharp thoughts on faith, nature, music and politics, or if you keep a diary yourself.

An orphan becomes a wandering student

Amiel was born in Geneva in 1821, into a family that had come from Languedoc after the Edict of Nantes was revoked. In 1833, at twelve, he lost both parents. The family broke up, and he went to one relative while his two sisters went to another.

He grew into a frail, dreamy boy who read enormously. He took lasting inspiration from Adolphe Pictet, whose lectures on aesthetics opened a city that had long seen beauty as truth's rival.

Then came the happy years from 1842 to 1848. Berlin was his home base, and each vacation took him farther, to Scandinavia, Holland, Vienna and Munich. German thought taught him to chase the whole of things. So the journal is not the work of a recluse who never saw the world. His inward turn came from a rich life, not an empty one.

A lonely childhood and a wide education together produced a mind that wanted everything and trusted nothing less.

Вопросы о книге Дневник Амиеля

What is Amiel's Journal about?

It is the private diary of a Geneva professor, kept for over thirty years. He writes about thought, will, faith, duty, nature, music, books, politics and his own struggles, ending with his failing health.

Why did Amiel write so little in his lifetime?

By his own account, timidity, endless self-criticism and a hunger for the whole kept him from finishing big works. He called his published pieces scales and exercises, and the journal became his real work.

Was the journal meant to be published?

Not at first. It was a private confidant, written freely without thought of an audience. Later he left instructions that executors might publish useful parts, and friends issued selections after his death.

Who are the important people in the journal?

Edmond Scherer, his close friend and the first editor, appears often. So do Vinet, Sainte-Beuve, Renan, Charles Heim, and writers such as Rousseau, Hugo and Madame de Staël.

What is the main message of the journal?

A thoughtful life can be uncertain and still be honest. Amiel finds steadiness in duty, kindness and trust in a forgiving God, while showing how analysis alone can keep us from acting.
