A girl follows a rabbit down a hole
The story opens on a hot afternoon. Alice sits on a riverbank beside her sister, bored, because her sister's book has no pictures or conversations in it. Then a white rabbit runs past, muttering that it will be too late. Even that does not startle her. What makes her jump up is the sight of the rabbit taking a watch out of its waistcoat pocket.
She follows it down a rabbit hole without a thought for the way back. The fall is so slow that she has time to look about. Cupboards and shelves line the walls.
Her talk during the fall shows her character. Then she thinks of her cat Dinah, and drifts into the puzzle of whether cats eat bats or bats eat cats.
She lands unhurt in sticks and shavings, then races into a hall of locked doors. A glass table holds a tiny golden key. It opens a door only eighteen inches high, and beyond it lies the loveliest garden she has ever seen. She cannot even get her head through.
Here the book sets its pattern. Alice wants something, the world blocks her, and she must find a way by trying odd things.
A curious child who follows one small oddity ends up in a place with rules of its own.

She tells her sister and runs home for tea. Her sister stays and dreams of Alice grown up, still loving, telling these tales to other children.
