Гнездо в руинах in short

A Nest in the Ruins gives you two stories about love that begins in the wrong place. In the first, a young woman falls under the spell of a handsome man who wants her fortune, loses her money and her trust, and rebuilds her life by work. Later she steers her daughter away from the same mistake, with a king, an aunt and a millionaire baker pulling in different directions.

What Гнездо в руинах is about

Imagine standing in a Paris tableau while a dark-haired marquis grips your wrist, and the next day a columnist calls you Marguerite and him Mephistopheles. That is the first great scene of A Nest in the Ruins, a two-part novel by Léon de Tinseau. It opens as the memoir of Hedwige de Tiesendorf, a diplomat's daughter, who tells her life from a quiet old age.

The second part moves to the Atlantic coast and to Biskra in Algeria, where a sick girl lives on letters from a stranger. You get honour and money told with wit, and a question: can a love built on words be real?

Для кого. You will love this book if you enjoy society novels with a witty narrator, family secrets, matchmaking aunts and love stories told through letters, and two linked tales in one volume.

A living picture binds Hedwige to Noircombe

Hedwige is nineteen when her father, a diplomat, is sent to Paris. She runs his household and waltzes so well that Napoleon III invites her to dance. She is happy, and engaged to her cousin Otto, whom she loves only like a brother.

Then comes an evening of living pictures. Hedwige plays Ophelia, and her Hamlet is the Marquis de Noircombe, a pale, handsome man known for charming women and keeping none. When he grips her wrist on stage, she feels her will wither like a flower scorched by a satanic breath.

A columnist writes that the pair looked like Marguerite and Mephistopheles, and Hedwige knows he is right. When her father says the marquis has asked for her hand, she faints, and weeps with something close to relief. She writes to Otto to end their engagement, and no answer ever comes. Hedwige's trouble begins when she mistakes fear for destiny.

Вопросы о книге Гнездо в руинах

What is A Nest in the Ruins about?

It is a two-part French novel. The first part follows Hedwige de Tiesendorf through a ruinous marriage and her work to secure her daughter's future. The second follows Clotilde Falconneau, a sick girl in Algeria, who finds hope in letters from a stranger.

Who is the Marquis de Noircombe?

He is a handsome nobleman with an ancient name and little money. Hedwige already knows him as a dance partner when they play Hamlet and Ophelia in a living picture. His obsession with cards shapes the whole first part of the story.

Why are there two stories in one book?

The two parts are linked by theme more than by plot. Both ask whether love can be trusted when it grows out of fear, illusion or words, and a short retelling of the Psyche myth stands between them as a guide.

Is A Nest in the Ruins easy to read?

It is told in a warm, funny voice, with short scenes, lively dialogue and a good deal of period colour. The second part is told largely through letters, which makes it easy to follow and quick to move.

What does the title mean?

The title comes from the King's remark to Hedwige that in the ruins of her hopes, dear little birds are about to build their nest. It points to her daughter's happiness rising from the wreck of her own.
