Маленькая предательница Юга in short
The book follows one February night in Charleston and the day after. A nurse, a plain lieutenant and a brilliant, doomed major are caught in a quarrel. Out of it come three acts of generosity and one great mistake.
What Маленькая предательница Юга is about
What would you do if the man you love were about to sail a boat that has drowned every crew it ever carried, and you believed that stopping him was the only way to save someone else? Fanny Glen, a nurse in Charleston in February 1864, makes her choice in a single desperate hour. It is a wrong choice, and she cannot take it back.
A Little Traitor to the South is a short wartime romance by Cyrus Townsend Brady, who wrote its preface in Brooklyn in February 1904. He built a light love story around a real event, the night attack of the little torpedo boat David on a Union warship in Charleston Harbor. You get a lively tale of two rivals and one small, strong-willed woman, set among hospitals, blockade runners and a city under siege.
Для кого. You will love this book if you enjoy wartime romance with a sense of humor, quarrelling lovers who are better than they seem, and a real episode of Civil War naval history.

Two rivals and one proud woman collide
The story opens in February 1864 in Charleston, South Carolina, a city that has held out against Union ships for two years. Miss Fanny Glen is small, fair-haired and fiercely independent. She faces Lieutenant Rhett Sempland, tall and used to giving orders. He loves her. She is not yet ready to admit that she loves him.
She works in the great general hospital and has become the head of its women. The soldiers call her an angel. Sempland and Major Harry Lacy both met her as patients. Lacy is handsome, gallant and ruined by drink. Sempland spent most of the war as a prisoner in the North, so he has no glory to show. Women find Lacy charming, yet they lean on Sempland.
Sempland makes a blunder. He orders Fanny to have nothing to do with Lacy and lists his vices. She flares up and sneers that other men have avoided danger by being taken prisoner. Then Lacy steps in through a tall window and says the charges are all true. He proposes on the spot.
Fanny cries out that she wishes Sempland had done something great, then sends them both away. Sempland answers that he will do something to earn her praise. That promise carries the rest of the story.
Pride and jealousy start a chain of events that no one in the room can stop.

A war story told as a comedy of hearts
Brady calls his book a little wartime comedy of the affections, and the telling follows that description.

Characters, plot and themes
Main characters
- Fanny Glen A small, fair, strong-willed nurse who heads the women of the Charleston hospital and hides a secret tie to the enemy fleet.
- Rhett Sempland A tall, plain, stubborn lieutenant, long a prisoner, who loves Fanny and wants one chance to prove his courage.
- Harry Lacy A handsome, daring major and war hero, ruined by drink, who loves Fanny and hopes to leave the world with honor.
- General Beauregard The small, formal commander of Charleston's defense, strict about duty yet shrewd and kind enough to look beneath it.

- Cato The oldest and most sensible of the three young men of Fanny's household who guard the door.
How it ends (spoiler)
General Beauregard clears Sempland, makes him a captain and posts him to General Lee's army with a personal letter. He also stages a little comedy, where officers pretend to sentence Fanny for treason. The way out, he says, is for Fanny Glen to disappear by becoming Mrs. Rhett Sempland. She agrees, saying she marries for love. Lacy has died in the attack on the Housatonic, and he is remembered as a hero.
