A Little Princess in short

A Little Princess follows Sara Crewe from a life of ease in London to work and hunger in the attic of Miss Minchin's school. She is clever, generous, and fond of stories, and she uses all three to survive. Her friends are the people the school overlooks, a scullery maid, a slow classmate, a spoiled little girl, a rat, and the sparrows at her window.

What A Little Princess is about

What does a girl do when she loses everything except her imagination? Sara Crewe is seven years old when a cab carries her through the London fog to Miss Minchin's school. Her father, a wealthy captain from India, leaves her there with a new doll called Emily.

A Little Princess was written by Frances Hodgson Burnett and published in 1905. It follows a clever, generous child as she falls from a room full of treasures to a freezing attic. You get her stubborn dignity, her odd friends, and the strange comforts that reach her when she needs them most.

Для кого. You will love this book if you enjoy kindness under pressure, brave and imaginative heroines, boarding school rivalries, cosy food and fire, and the old London of fog and gaslight.

A rich girl arrives at a cold school

On a dark winter day in London, the fog is so thick that the lamps are lit as though it were night. Inside a cab sits Sara Crewe, seven years old, leaning against her father, Captain Crewe. They have just made the long voyage from Bombay. Her mother died when she was born, so he is the only family she knows.

The school is tall, brick, and gloomy. Miss Minchin has cold, fishlike eyes and a wide, fishlike smile. She calls Sara beautiful, and Sara decides this is a lie. Later she learns Miss Minchin says it to every parent, and is mostly pleased by a father who will pay well.

The captain buys her a wardrobe far too grand for a child, and a doll called Emily who looks as if she listens. On the last day Sara tells him she knows him by heart. Then she watches the cab turn the corner.

A princess dressed in furs is only the starting point of this tale.
