Письмо индусу in short
Tolstoy begins with a puzzle. Why do two hundred million people in India live under thirty thousand foreigners? He answers that the cause is spiritual. People have lost a reasonable religious teaching, and every great tradition taught love until rulers bent it into a rule for private life.
What Письмо индусу is about
How can thirty thousand men rule two hundred million people? That question sits at the heart of A Letter to a Hindu, an open letter Leo Tolstoy wrote at his home, Yasnaya Polyana, on December 14, 1908. His answer is not the one most readers expect. He does not blame the rulers first. He looks at the ruled, and at the habits of mind they share with those who rule them.
Tolstoy is eighty and world famous as the author of War and Peace, yet he now cares more for moral teaching. He writes in reply to a Hindu correspondent who argued that force must be met with force. Tolstoy answers with a warm but firm plea for love. The letter later helped shape the modern idea of nonviolent resistance.
Для кого. Readers who care about peace, nonviolence and the moral roots of politics will find a clear, forceful voice here. It suits anyone drawn to questions of empire, obedience and conscience.

Oppression begins with a lost moral guide
Tolstoy opens with a puzzle. Why does a large body of working people obey a small group of idlers who control their labor and even their lives? He says the answer is the same whether the rulers share the nation or come from another.
The puzzle looks sharpest to him in India. More than two hundred million people, gifted in body and mind, live under a small band of foreigners. Those foreigners, in his judgment, stand far below the Indians in religious morality. He asks the reader to feel that strangeness before looking for a cure.
His diagnosis is that people have lost a reasonable religious teaching, one that explains what life means and gives a highest law for conduct. Without it, they fall for false guides that he calls pseudo-religion and pseudo-science, and for the conclusions the modern world calls civilization. What troubles him most is that many Indian opinion leaders no longer value the faith of their own people. They want to free India by copying the order of England, which he judges irreligious and deeply immoral.
So the cause of enslavement, he says, is not a lack of weapons or political skill but a lack of religious awareness. A listener can test any reform by asking whether it changes how people live, or only who sits in the seats of power. The root of oppression is a loss of moral conviction, not a shortage of force.

Вопросы о книге Письмо индусу
What is A Letter to a Hindu about?
It is Tolstoy's reply to an Indian correspondent who favored resisting force with force. Tolstoy argues that oppression lasts because people live by violence, and that the law of love and refusal to take part in force offer the only real freedom.
When did Tolstoy write A Letter to a Hindu and why?
He wrote it on December 14, 1908, at Yasnaya Polyana, after receiving a letter and issues of the periodical Free Hindustan. He wanted to explain his views on the oppression of the many by the few and on the cause of India's troubles.
What does Tolstoy mean by the law of love?
He means a rule found in every great religion that people should treat one another with love and never answer evil with evil. For him it excludes violent resistance, imprisonment, executions and war, and it should guide public life as well as private life.
Why does Tolstoy say the Indians enslaved themselves?
He points out that thirty thousand English, working through a commercial company, ruled two hundred million Indians. He argues this was possible only because the people accepted force as the basis of order and supplied the strength that held their own rulers in place.
Is A Letter to a Hindu easy to follow?
Yes, it is a short open letter with seven clear steps, each building on the last. Tolstoy writes in plain direct language, and verses from Krishna, the Vedas and the Hindu Kural between sections give the argument a steady rhythm.
