A bookseller's strange offer starts the tale

The novel opens with a speaker who worries about the promise of constitutional government. He fears the words in preparation will keep it from ever arriving, and that ordinary people will be blamed as unready. So he sets out to show how far society stands from its hopes.

After school in Japan, he goes to Beijing for an examination. In Liulichang, the street of books, he picks up a manuscript called A Cold Eye on Society. The bookseller has two prices. A conservative who clings to the old ways must pay three hundred pounds in gold. A young person devoted to the public good may take it for nothing.

The seller says the bizarre things of the old society block the new future, and people must know them to correct their faults. The speaker reads the manuscript in his lodgings, weeping over the corruption it records. Then Wang Xiaoya steps onto the page.

A book that states its purpose in the first pages asks you to weigh the evidence yourself.
