この本について
What if the hardest person to understand is the one you have been all your life?
In The Confessions of St. Augustine, Saint Augustine of Hippo looks back at childhood, schooling, ambition and desire. He tells his life directly to God, leaving readers to listen in. From the temptations of Carthage to his encounters with Ambrose in Milan, he examines what draws him toward truth and what holds him back.
For Augustine, confession means admitting faults, praising God and declaring belief. His account traces his turn to Christianity, then moves beyond life story into questions about memory, time and Genesis. He asks how a divided will can change, what evil is, and why, in his understanding, the heart seeks rest in God.

Even a baby shows a self-seeking will
Augustine begins with praise, and then with himself as an infant. He cannot remember those first days, so he watches other babies. What he sees is not purity of heart but weakness of limb. A baby cries, grabs, and rages at elders who do not obey.
Nobody blames the child, because it cannot understand correction. Yet Augustine says the habit is the very one that harms grown people.

What is the Confessions of St. Augustine about?
It is Augustine's life story told as a prayer to God. It follows his childhood, his years of study, his search for truth, and his change of heart in Milan. The last books turn to memory, time, and Genesis.
Why is it called Confessions?
Confessing here means both admitting faults and praising God. Augustine does both throughout the book. He names his sins, but also thanks God for guiding him, so the title covers the whole book.
What is the story of the pear tree in the Confessions?
As a boy of sixteen, Augustine and some friends steal pears from a tree near his family's vineyard. They do not even want the fruit and throw it to pigs. He uses the event to ask why people love wrongdoing.
