この本について
What happens when a captain turns an entire ship toward the creature that took his leg?
Ishmael leaves the land in search of escape and adventure. With his friend Queequeg, a brave and loyal harpooner, he joins the whaling ship Pequod. Its captain, Ahab, has another purpose: to find Moby Dick, the white whale he blames for his wound.
As Ahab's vengeance takes hold, the voyage becomes a struggle between one man's will and the lives around him. Starbuck, the cautious first mate, fears his captain's purpose. Meanwhile, Ishmael explores whales, ships, faith, and fate, turning an adventure at sea into a restless search for meaning.

Ishmael takes to the sea to cure gloom
The book opens with a man who needs water. Ishmael says that whenever his soul feels like a damp, drizzly November, he goes to sea. It is his answer to low spirits. He goes as an ordinary sailor, because sailors are paid and passengers pay.
He argues that this pull belongs to nearly everyone. On a dreamy Sunday in Manhattan, thousands of clerks and shopkeepers stand at the ends of the piers, staring at the harbor. His best answer is the story of Narcissus, who drowned while reaching for his own image in a fountain. For Ishmael, all seas reflect that same image.

What is Moby-Dick about?
It tells of Ishmael, a sailor who joins the whaler Pequod and finds that its captain, Ahab, has sworn to kill the white whale that took his leg. It is a sea adventure, a study of obsession and a portrait of whaling.
Who is Ishmael and why does he say Call me Ishmael?
Ishmael is the narrator, a young sailor who tells the story. The phrase Call me Ishmael suggests it may be a chosen name rather than a birth name, which makes him a sort of wanderer, like the biblical outcast.
What does the white whale mean in Moby-Dick?
The book never settles on one meaning. For Ahab, the whale embodies all the evil and pain in life. Ishmael adds a chapter on whiteness itself, suggesting that it carries awe, fear and emptiness at once.
