この本について
What words can hold both grief and gratitude, fear of death and the hope of resurrection?
Sacred Hymns from the German gathers devotional poems in English by Frances Elizabeth Cox. Its songs draw mainly on Lutheran and Pietist traditions, bringing the concerns of German church song into view: praise, trust, sorrow, and hope beyond death. Here, faith finds expression in words meant to be read slowly and spoken aloud.
Among the hymns are Jesus lives, thy terrors now and Sing praise to God who reigns above, both of which enter English hymnals and remain in use. Across the collection, praise stands beside the need for comfort. These poems offer a way to explore how Christian devotional traditions give voice to thanks and grief.

The book follows one full church year
Cox offers a small book for church and home. Her dedication names the Bishop of Salisbury and Charles Christian Bunsen, and says the hymns come from his collection. A line from Psalm fifty-seven calls on lute and harp to wake. These are songs, made to be sung aloud.
The order follows the Christian calendar. Advent comes first, then Christmas, Epiphany, Good Friday and Easter. After these come Ascension Day, Whit Sunday and Trinity Sunday. Then the book moves into ordinary hours, with hymns for the new year, for morning and evening, and for Sunday.

What is Sacred Hymns from the German about?
It is a collection of German devotional hymns in English verse, beginning with Advent and ending with hymns on harvest, the Bible and the Reformation. It includes hymns for feasts, daily prayer, baptism, marriage, burial, nature and the Bible.
Who wrote the hymns in Sacred Hymns from the German?
The hymns come from German poets such as Johann Rist, Paul Gerhard, Christian Fürchtegott Gellert, Benjamin Schmolck, Gerhard Tersteegen and Martin Luther. Frances Elizabeth Cox provides the English versions, and most pieces end with the poet's name and dates.
What are the Bible verses above each hymn?
Each hymn begins with a short Scripture text that sets its theme. For example, Isaiah introduces Advent, Luke introduces Christmas, and Psalm one hundred and thirty-three introduces the hymn on brotherly love. Reading the verse first helps you hear the hymn.
