A boy millionaire builds an abbey in haste
William Beckford is where the book begins, because his life shows eccentricity at its largest scale. His father leaves him about a million pounds in ready money and a huge yearly income. He grows into a lively scholar, is taught the piano by Mozart, and at twenty-two writes the tale Vathek.
Then he builds Fonthill Abbey in Wiltshire. He raises a wall twelve feet high and seven miles long around the estate, and guards admit no stranger. Hundreds of men work day and night by torchlight. One Christmas he swears that dinner will be cooked in the new kitchen. The mortar is still wet, and the kitchen collapses as the servants carry the dishes. Nobody is hurt, and Beckford has money enough to build another.
