A séance ends with a strange invitation
The book opens in March at Prolands, the Hampstead home of Montague Faull. He has hired a medium named Backhouse to produce a materialization for a small circle of guests. Two late guests arrive. Maskull is a huge bearded man with small, bright eyes. Nightspore is lean and wild eyed.
A mist gathers above a couch and forms a young man in a shroud. Faull seizes his hand, and the youth wakes with a puzzling smile. Then a short, thick stranger bursts in, laughs, and wrenches the figure's neck. The smile turns to a sordid, bestial grin, and the body melts away.

A man named Maskull follows the stranger Krag from a séance in Hampstead to a planet called Tormance, near the star Arcturus. There he travels north through strange lands, meeting people who each hold a different idea about pleasure, love and truth.
Who are Krag, Nightspore and Surtur?
Krag is the forceful stranger who arranges the journey. Nightspore is Maskull's lean, silent companion, who vanishes soon after arrival. Surtur is the being they are said to follow, and the book builds its mystery around that name.
What do Crystalman and Muspel mean?
Crystalman, also called Shaping, is the maker of the visible world of pleasure and form, shown with a grinning mask on the dead. Muspel is another world, glimpsed as a colorless light and a drumbeat, which the book treats as a true home.

David Lindsay (1876–1945) was a British novelist of Scottish ancestry. He was born in London and died in Hove, Sussex. He wrote A Voyage to Arcturus, published in 1920, and The Haunted Woman, published in 1922. He worked in insurance before serving in the British Army during the First World War.
