この本について
What happens when a family thinks it owns the future, and the future has other plans?
In a growing Midwestern city, the Ambersons have the grand house, the parties, and the town’s respect. Major Amberson’s fortune seems to place them beyond ordinary worries. His grandson, George Amberson Minafer, grows up certain that his name entitles him to everything—and that nothing needs to change.
But Eugene Morgan returns as an automobile builder, bringing a new age into the Ambersons’ world. He still hopes for a second chance with George’s mother, Isabel. Meanwhile, his lively daughter Lucy attracts George. In Booth Tarkington’s The Magnificent Ambersons, family pride meets private longing as the city grows louder, dirtier, and less deferential.

A thrifty town makes the Ambersons seem magnificent
The novel begins with a look at the town before it looks at any person. Tarkington describes the silk dresses, the mule that pulls the streetcar and the open houses on New Year's Day. He wants you to feel a way of life that is already gone.
The townspeople are thrifty because their grandparents were pioneers who feared they had not stored enough for winter. Spending on art or pleasure still feels to them like a sin. Against that plain background, the Ambersons stand out like a brass band at a funeral. Major Amberson lays out a whole new district called Amberson Addition and builds a great Mansion with a glass dome and a ballroom on the third floor.

What is The Magnificent Ambersons about?
It follows the rise and slow decline of a wealthy Midland family across three generations, centring on the spoiled grandson George, his devoted mother Isabel, and the inventor Eugene Morgan. It is a portrait of a small town becoming a smoky city.
Who is George Amberson Minafer?
George, called Georgie, is Major Amberson's only grandchild and Isabel's only son. He grows up proud and charming, convinced he need not work. His pride shapes every major choice in the story, and the town long waits for him to face a reckoning.
When was The Magnificent Ambersons written and is it a true story?
Booth Tarkington published it in 1918. The family and the Midland town are invented, but they draw on real American life in the decades when horse carriages gave way to automobiles and towns grew into industrial cities.
