この本について
What if the world you see and touch cannot exist apart from a mind?
In A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge, George Berkeley challenges the idea of matter beneath everything we perceive. He argues that what exists is minds and the ideas they perceive. His starting point is simple, but the stakes are large: what can we know about the world, and what do we mean when we call something real?
Berkeley sees the new science and John Locke’s philosophy as paths toward doubt about the world and God. His answer unfolds in short, numbered sections. He attacks abstract ideas, questions the qualities we assign to objects, and asks whether matter explains anything at all. According to Berkeley, active spirits, rather than matter, cause the ideas we perceive.

Philosophers create their own confusion with abstract ideas
Berkeley opens with a puzzle. Ordinary people trust their senses and live at ease. Philosophers reason carefully about the same world and end up in doubt and paradox. Why should deep thought make us know less?
His answer is that we blame the wrong thing. The fault lies in a few false principles that thinkers have repeated for ages and never examined. The chief culprit is the doctrine of abstract ideas. This is the belief that the mind can strip a thing of all its particular features and hold what remains. Philosophers say we form an idea of man in general, with no particular height, color or shape.

What is A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge about?
It argues that the things we sense are collections of ideas that exist in minds, that a hidden material substance is an empty notion, and that the order of nature comes from a divine spirit.
What does esse is percipi mean in Berkeley?
It is the Latin phrase often used for his claim that to be is to be perceived. For sensible things, existing means being seen, felt or otherwise known by some mind.
Does Berkeley say the world is not real?
No. He says trees, tables and stars are real because they are ideas given to us in steady, orderly patterns. What he denies is an unperceived material substance behind them.
