Who Uncle Toby is
Uncle Toby belongs to the family whose stories repeatedly interrupt Tristram Shandy's attempt to describe his own life. He is Walter's brother, but his gentle manner contrasts with Walter's elaborate theories and argumentative schemes.
After being wounded during military service, Toby becomes absorbed in the study of sieges and fortifications. His military interests take a practical form as he recreates operations on a small scale with Corporal Trim.
Uncle Toby and the others in the story
Corporal Trim is Toby's devoted servant and helps him stage their miniature military campaigns. The campaigns can look absurd, yet Toby's kindness gives these shared activities a warmth distinct from Walter's schemes.
Widow Wadman takes an interest in Toby and tries to discover what his war wound might mean for marriage. Courtship brings Toby into less familiar territory, where understanding another person presents different problems from studying fortifications.
