Who Pearl is

Pearl grows up with Hester in a small cottage near the sea and the woods. Without friends or neighbors, her world centers on her mother, the beach and the forest edge. She is quick and watchful, sometimes seeming to understand more than a small child should.

Pearl and the others in the story

For Hester, Pearl is both a beloved daughter and a reminder of her public punishment. Hester names her Pearl because the child has cost her everything she has. When other children mock Pearl, she answers their cruelty with fierce anger.

The town's leaders question whether Hester should raise her, bringing their bond under threat. Arthur Dimmesdale speaks for keeping mother and daughter together, calling the child both a gift and a trial.

What Pearl wants

Pearl wants answers about the scarlet letter and the minister's habit of holding his hand over his heart. Her questions bring hidden pain into ordinary moments, even when the adults do not answer openly. She seems to sense secrets, but Hawthorne leaves room to wonder how much she truly understands.
