Who Sally Seton is
Sally Seton belongs to Clarissa's memories of Bourton, the country house where Clarissa grows up. She smokes cigars, runs along corridors in her dressing gown and speaks boldly about politics. Her daring manner contrasts with the settled married life she later leads as Lady Rosseter.
Sally Seton and the others in the story
Clarissa admires Sally more than anyone else during their girlhood at Bourton. When Sally kisses her beside a flower urn on the terrace, Clarissa feels something deeply precious. Peter Walsh interrupts them, breaking the spell of a moment Clarissa continues to treasure.
The memory reveals a depth of feeling that Clarissa has never fully acted on. Sally's place in her thoughts shows how an earlier attachment remains alive beneath her present social life.
How Sally Seton changes
The daring girl of Clarissa's memories becomes a wealthy married woman with five sons. That contrast places Sally within the novel's concern with time and the continuing presence of the past.
