26: Chapter 1 · chapter okuma süresi: 3 dakika
In Chapter 1, paired teachings explain how thoughts and actions bring suffering or happiness, contrasting hatred, indulgence, and false understanding with love, restraint, and truth. The chapter makes inward discipline and actual practice, rather than outward dress or extensive recitation, the tests of a genuine religious life.

- The opening teachings connect harmful thoughts with pain and pure thoughts with happiness.
- Holding onto injuries sustains hatred, while love and awareness of death bring conflict to an end.
- Contrasts involving Mara and the yellow robe show the importance of restraint, strength, truth, and moral cleansing.
- Clear understanding leads toward truth, and reflection protects the mind against passion.
- Wrongdoers suffer over their actions in both worlds, while virtuous people find joy in theirs.
- The closing comparison values practiced discipline above extensive recitation without action.
