Who Tybalt is
Tybalt belongs to the Capulet family in Verona, where an old feud divides two wealthy households. He is Juliet's cousin, and his proud, hot temper makes him eager to fight the Montagues. His readiness to draw a sword shows how family hatred becomes a public danger.
What Tybalt wants
Tybalt seeks reasons to fight the Montagues, and Romeo's presence at the Capulet feast gives him one. He recognises Romeo by his voice and wants to attack him during the celebration. Lord Capulet forbids the attack because he does not want the party spoiled. Tybalt leaves angry, with his wish to confront Romeo still unresolved.
Tybalt and the others in the story
Tybalt's connection to Juliet places him within the very family Romeo has been taught to oppose. While the lovers reach across that division, Tybalt acts on the hatred that keeps their households apart. His clash with Lord Capulet also shows that the family does not always agree about when to fight.
