Who Tommy Dukes is
Tommy Dukes belongs to the circle of friends who gather at Wragby Hall to argue about life and ideas. He speaks bluntly about the modern mind and its separation from the body. His argument is that people have become too absorbed in thought, while real life needs more than intellectual conversation.
Tommy Dukes and the others in the story
Dukes is a friend of Sir Clifford Chatterley, whose household gives Connie plenty of talk but little warmth. When Connie hears Dukes speak, his words strike home because she feels her own physical life is being neglected. Yet he does not act on his ideas, leaving a gap between what he says and how he lives.
