Who Constance Chatterley is

Constance Chatterley lives in the English Midlands with her husband, Sir Clifford Chatterley, who returns from war paralysed. She nurses him, listens to his writing and tries to believe that their shared thoughts can sustain their marriage.

Connie grows up in an artistic home, but life at Wragby follows a stiff and watchful routine. As Clifford enjoys his work and reputation, she feels her own health and sense of life fading.

What Constance Chatterley wants

Connie wants more than clever conversation, good manners and the daily duties of caring for her husband. She longs to be met with physical warmth, kindness and genuine attention.

An affair with the playwright Michaelis helps her see that being desired is not enough. His selfishness leaves her searching for a tenderness that brings feeling and the body together.

How Constance Chatterley changes

When Mrs Bolton takes over Clifford's nursing, Connie gains time to walk and think in the woods. There she grows close to Oliver Mellors, whose guarded manner begins to soften toward her.

Their relationship awakens her senses, and she notices flowers, weather and trees with renewed feeling. Yet their closeness also challenges the class boundaries separating a baronet's wife from an estate gamekeeper.
