Let not my love be call’d idolatry,Nor my beloved as an idol show,Since all alike my songs and praises beTo one, of one, still such, and ever so.Kind is my love to-day, to-morrow kind,Still constant in a wondrous excellence; Therefore my verse to constancy confin’d,One thing expressing, leaves out difference.‘Fair, kind, and true,’ is all my argument,‘Fair, kind, and true,’ varying to other words; And in this change is my invention spent,Three themes in one, which wondrous scope affords.Fair, kind, and true, have often liv’d alone,Which three till now, never kept seat in one.
Do not call my love idol worship or portray my beloved as an idol, since my songs and praises are all alike: addressed to one person, about one person, always the same and always will be. My love is kind today and kind tomorrow, always faithful in a wonderful excellence. So my poetry, devoted to that faithfulness, expresses one thing and leaves variety aside. “Beautiful, kind, and true” is my whole subject, “beautiful, kind, and true” expressed in different words. I spend my creativity on these variations: three themes in one, offering a wonderful range. Beauty, kindness, and truth have often existed separately, but until now these three have never lived together in one person.
