If the dull substance of my flesh were thought,Injurious distance should not stop my way;For then despite of space I would be brought,From limits far remote, where thou dost stay.No matter then although my foot did standUpon the farthest earth remov’d from thee; For nimble thought can jump both sea and land,As soon as think the place where he would be.But, ah! thought kills me that I am not thought,To leap large lengths of miles when thou art gone,But that so much of earth and water wrought,I must attend time’s leisure with my moan;Receiving nought by elements so slowBut heavy tears, badges of either’s woe.
If the heavy substance of my flesh were thought,
cruel distance could not block my way.
Then, despite the space between us, I would travel
from these distant places to wherever you are.
It would not matter if my feet stood
on the spot on earth farthest from you,
for quick thought can cross both sea and land
as soon as it thinks of where it wants to be.
But, oh, it kills me to think that I am not thought,
able to leap across the miles when you are gone.
Instead, made so largely of earth and water,
I must wait, groaning, for time to take its course.
These slow elements give me nothing
but heavy tears, signs of the sorrow of both.
