Plato on death

이 페이지는 도서관의 책 요약을 바탕으로 한 내용이에요. Plato의 글은 아니에요.

Plato treated death as less important than living rightly. Through Socrates in Apology, he presented a man who refused to abandon his principles simply to stay alive. Uncertainty about death did not justify doing something wrong. Plato also explored the soul as something beyond bodily life: in Phaedrus, Socrates argued that the soul was immortal. His treatment of death therefore joined concern for the soul with the conviction that survival was not the highest good.

Courage rested on moral judgment

In Apology, Socrates compared his philosophical duty to a soldier remaining at his post. The comparison made courage a matter of faithfulness to a task, rather than confidence that danger would pass or that death could be avoided.

Dignity mattered at the trial

Plato's Socrates refused to seek mercy through tears or by bringing his children before the jury. He held that pity should not replace fair judgment. His conduct showed how the threat of death could test principles in ordinary actions.

The soul had enduring life

In Phaedrus, Socrates based the soul's immortality on its power to move itself. He then pictured it as a charioteer guiding two different horses. This account placed death within a wider exploration of the soul's nature and direction.
