Pride and Prejudice in short

Pride and Prejudice follows Elizabeth Bennet through a year of meetings, quarrels, and mistakes. A rich man rents a house, a proud friend insults her, and a charming officer offers a flattering story. Elizabeth trusts her sharp eyes, while Darcy trusts his rank.

What Pride and Prejudice is about

Imagine a village where a rich man cannot move in without every mother counting her daughters. That is how Pride and Prejudice begins, with Mrs. Bennet bursting in to tell her husband that Netherfield Park has been rented. He teases her, she scolds him, and within a page you know both for life.

Jane Austen, an English novelist who died in 1817, wrote this story of five sisters in the Hertfordshire countryside. Their father's estate will pass to a male cousin, so the girls need good marriages soon. Austen turns that fact into comedy, with quick talk, foolish relatives, and two people who judge each other far too fast.

The story in 10 parts

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

A rich bachelor arrives and a village stirs

The story opens with a joke about wealth and marriage. Mrs. Bennet tells her husband that Netherfield Park has been rented by a young man named Bingley, who has four or five thousand pounds a year. She wants Mr. Bennet to call on him at once, because she has five daughters to settle. He answers with dry remarks.

Then he goes anyway and tells nobody. The news comes out when he tells his second daughter, Lizzy, that he hopes Mr. Bingley will like her hat. Mrs. Bennet swings from sulking to delight in a single breath. Mr. Bennet is clever and sarcastic. Mrs. Bennet has little sense and a firm belief that her nerves are always suffering.

The five girls are drawn quickly. Jane is gentle and sees good in everyone. Elizabeth is quick and playful. Mary lectures anyone who will listen, while Kitty and Lydia care for dancing and officers.

Money sits behind the humor. Longbourn is entailed, so it must go to a distant male cousin when Mr. Bennet dies. A rich neighbor is therefore a chance at safety, and that hope drives the comedy.

Who is Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice?

Fitzwilliam Darcy is the wealthy owner of Pemberley in Derbyshire and the close friend of Mr. Bingley. He is reserved and proud at first meeting, and much of the story is about how Elizabeth comes to see him more fairly.

What do the title words pride and prejudice mean?

Pride shows in Darcy's sense of rank and in Elizabeth's confidence in her own sharp judgment. Prejudice is the quick opinion each forms about the other and about people like Wickham. The book tests both qualities through scenes and conversations.

When was Pride and Prejudice written, and is it a true story?

Jane Austen published it in 1813. It is fiction, but it draws a realistic picture of country life, inheritance laws, and marriage choices in early nineteenth century England, which is why it feels so true to life.

Is Pride and Prejudice easy to read?
