Plato on justice

이 페이지는 도서관의 책 요약을 바탕으로 한 내용이에요. Plato의 글은 아니에요.

Plato thought justice was good for the person who practiced it, not simply a way to gain praise or rewards. In The Republic, he presented it as an order within the soul: reason governed, spirit supported reason, and appetite followed their lead. He connected this inner harmony with a city in which each group performed its own work. Justice therefore concerned both how people lived together and how a person’s desires and judgment were ordered.

Simple rules needed careful testing

In The Republic, Socrates questioned whether justice meant merely telling the truth and returning what belonged to others. The example of a weapon lent by a friend who later became mad exposed the limits of treating justice as a fixed rule.

His ideal city restricted rule

Plato assigned government to philosophers who valued truth above power, rather than giving every citizen an equal voice. This was a view of his time. His account of civic justice rested on a hierarchy, not equal participation in government.

Socrates embodied commitment under pressure

In Apology, Plato portrayed Socrates as unwilling to abandon his principles to escape death. Socrates also refused to seek acquittal through pity, holding that jurors should honor their duty rather than let sympathy determine their judgment.
