Aristotle on death
이 페이지는 도서관의 책 요약을 바탕으로 한 내용이에요. Aristotle의 글은 아니에요.
Aristotle’s account of happiness did not by itself establish what he thought about death or an afterlife. His concern was how a person lived: happiness meant activity in accordance with virtue across a whole life, rather than a passing feeling of pleasure. That emphasis explained his understanding of a good life, but it did not amount to a teaching about mortality or about how awareness of death should guide a person’s choices.
Character developed through repeated actions
In The Ethics of Aristotle, he explained that people developed virtues through practice rather than good intentions alone. Repeated choices shaped character, while practical wisdom helped a person judge what particular circumstances required rather than simply follow a fixed rule.
Living well involved other people
His ethical inquiry covered friendship and justice alongside individual character. A good life therefore involved more than a person’s private feelings or achievements. Fair dealings and relationships belonged to his account of happiness, while contemplation held the highest place among activities.
Tragedy explored pity and fear
In The Poetics of Aristotle, he examined how tragedy aroused pity and fear through human action. He preferred a hero’s fall to arise from error rather than wickedness, making tragic suffering intelligible without treating it simply as punishment for bad character.
